Students Out and About: Recent and Upcoming Field Trips

It has been a busy few weeks at City High School with numerous trips and field study experiences for students in all grade levels. Parents: Ask you son or daughter where they have been lately and what they experienced and learned.

Some of the recent excursions include:

  • During the past couple of weeks chemistry students have visited the Hayden-Udall Water Treatment Plant as well as the Dunbar Springs Neighborhood. Both of these visits involve ‘action research’ and are a part of the chemistry classes unit on water. The goal is to expose our students to how water is used in our community and for them to develop plans for how we can better manage our water resources in the future.
  • In late January, the Pennington Post newspaper class visited the offices of the Arizona Daily Star for a behind-the-scenes look at the world of daily newspaper production.
  • Last week 11th graders went to the U of A to visit the Borderlands exhibit at the UA Art Museum and stop by the Center for Creative Photography. This trip was part of their joint unit on border issues in their social studies and English classes.
  • 10th Graders spent the day exploring the San Xavier Mission on February 9. The trip included connections to their American Studies and Geometry classes.
  • On February 7 students from the Graphic Design and Photography classes visited Sam Hughes School to present their finished children’s board books to the elementary school authors. This project was part an artist residency with Stories That Soar artists Drew and Andrea Burk.
  • 12th Graders recently went to the University of Arizona as part of a writing exchange collaboration set up through their Senior English classes.

Upcoming trips taking place next week:

  • 9th Graders head to Tumamoc Hill on Tuesday 2/21 for a history-science trip.
  • 11th Graders are walking to the University of Arizona on Wednesday 2/22 for a college tour.

Parents: Look for an email from teachers with more details about these 2 trips. Both trips will involve walking and students need to plan ahead to make the day enjoyable.
