City High School and VOICES are pleased to offer some totally rockin’-awesome-fabulous workshops for the students of City High School as part of our Extended Day Learning program. More workshops will be announced, so please check back often to see what new options are available for students.

GREENHOUSE = GREEN ALLEY:    

  • June 11 – 27th

Want to play in the dirt? Interested in creating a greenhouse at school and helping build a garden in the alley? Spend a few days in  June creating a cooler and more “green” alley to eat your lunch in.

CULINARY ARTS – Week 1:  Baking Intensive:

The goal of Culinary VOICES goal is to enrich the participant’s skills and attitudes of food and food issues. By teaching the fundamentals of cookery and preparing the students to apply concepts of English, math and science to daily life skills. To be a community resource that caters to the needs of the individual and engages in service learning projects. To nourish the hearts and minds by teaching the art of service. This session will focus on baking essentials – including cakes, cookies, pastries, and more!

CULINARY ARTS – Week 2:  Know Your Cuts of Meat

Days & Hours:

  • Monday – Friday
  • July 16 – 20, 2012
  • 9am – 12pm

Limit:  20 students

 This session will focus on increasing student’s awareness of the wide variety of cuts of meat and how to cook them in ways to accent their flavor and nutrition.

CULINARY ARTS – Week 3;  Vegetable Varieties

Days & Hours:

  • Monday – Friday
  • July 23 – 27, 2012
  • 9am – 12pm

This session will focus on increasing student’s awareness of the wide variety of delicious and nutritious vegetables that can be found at the grocery store and local farmer’s markets. Students will learn how to cook vegetables in ways that accent their flavor and pair them well with other flavors.

PORTAL 2 –  LAB RATS:  Week 1:  Introduction

Days & Hours:

This workshop is an introduction to designing and building maps for Portal 2 using the same development kit as Valve software – using Portal 2. Participants will create fun and interactive 3D puzzles while learning all about game design and game development. Portal 2 is a hilariously mind-bending adventure that challenges you to use wits over weaponry in a funhouse of diabolical science. Using a highly experimental portal device, you’ll once again face off against a lethally inventive, power-mad A.I. named GLaDOS. And this time you won’t be alone. Meet an expanded cast of characters as you think your way through dangerous, never-before-seen areas of Aperture Laboratories. Break the laws of spatial physics in ways you never thought possible, with a wider variety of portal puzzles and an expansive story that spans a single player and co-operative game mode.

PORTAL 2 –  LAB RATS:  Weeks 2-3:  Advanced

MURAL MAKING:

Are you interested in painting or drawing? Are you curious about and how to create a mural and want to learn more about which paints work best on different surfaces? During this workshop, participants will work with super-talented local mural artist Johanna Martinez to design and paint a mural in the upstairs student’s restrooms that will brighten the days of City High School students for years to come.  Bring your creativity, imagination and “leave your mark” on your high school.
SKETCHING 101:

If you are one of those awesome individuals who is always drawing, sketching or doodling – this workshop is for you! Join local artist Gavin Troy for a week-long intensive workshop in which you will make your own sketchbook and then head around downtown to sketch. Gavin will guide students to refine their sketching technique to improve their artistry. Downtown sketching spots will include time spent in the cool air-conditioning at the Tucson Museum of Art, where workshop participants will receive free admission.
