Health and Wellness Day Friday, Jan. 26

Our annual Health and Wellness Community Day is happening this Friday, Jan. 26, organized by Health and Wellness Coordinator Erica Saunders and our AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Ariana Garcia. Regular classes will not meet. Students will start the day in Advisory and then get to choose from a variety of community presenters throughout the day:

  • Sexual Education with Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW) (Morning Sessions- JUNIORS and SENIORS ONLY): The Southwest Institute for Research on Women will be talking about sexual health, sexually transmitted diseases, and contraception.
  • Glorious Greens with Jenn and Dani (Sessions 2, 4, 6): A quick, easy, DELICIOUS way to get greens in your belly! We will chop and sauté up some hearty winter greens for you to enjoy. Learn simple knife and cooking skills, and why/how eating dark, leafy greens can help support your health.
  • Opioid Overdose Prevention and Naloxone with Sonoran Prevention Works (All Sessions): Participants will learn about the trends in overdose rates both nationally and locally. They will learn good harm reduction messaging around preventing an opioid overdose and the major risk factors for overdose. Additionally they will learn how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to respond including how to use the life-saving medication Naloxone.
  • Body Positive (All Sessions): Our presentation will be entirely focused on promoting positive body image in young adults. We will be offering an introduction to Health at Every Size® and other topics related to weight and health.
  • Sugar and Nutrition with Tucson Village Farm (All Sessions): Elizabeth Sparks and Natalie Shepp (Tucson Village Farm/Arizona 4-H) will lead a hands-on demonstration that will teach students how much sugar is in common drinks and which drinks are the best choices. They will also provide a simple and tasty alternative to common sugary drinks.
  • Cyberbullying with University of Arizona College of Public Health (Morning Sessions): Lindsay Bingham from the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health will talk about bullying, with a focus on cyberbullying and social media.
  • Healthy Relationship dynamics with SAAF (All Sessions): SAAF will present about the HYPE/YELL program they facilitate at City High School about healthy relationships and LGBTQ youth leadership.
  • Self-care with SAAF (Afternoon Sessions): SAAF will present about the ALLY program that they facilitate about youth mental health and suicide, focusing on the LGBTQ community.
  • Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Awareness (All Sessions): DAPA City High will facilitate a conversation and interactive activity about the effects different drugs have on adolescent brains, and how to promote prevention in our community.
  • Let’s Play! (All Sessions): City High EA and Fitness instructor Will Smith will facilitate activities outside with students to get them moving and understand the importance of daily activity and fitness to overall wellness.
  • Hardwiring Positivity and Flowing Through Life’s Stressors with Maria Luisa (Sessions 1-5):  Former City High teacher and current substitute teacher Maria Luisa Ruiz Luna will facilitate workshops with students about the science of happiness and how to promote happiness in your daily routine and how to handle the stressors of daily life.
  • Yoga and Mindfulness (Afternoon Sessions): Yoga and mindfulness can be important parts of overall wellness, distressing, and movement in life. Ariana will lead students through a short restorative practice and a mindfulness meditation from Calm.com.
  • Guy Talk (for all genders) (All Sessions): The Guy Talk program offered by Child and Family Resources will explore topics related to healthy masculinity.
