Principal’s Notes

City High School was busy participating in community events this weekend. We had a booth at the TPAC Family Arts Festival on Sunday that featured chalk making for younger kids. The chalk-making activity was designed to promote the sidewalk chalk art presentation at the festival led by Mural Art Teacher Leia Maahs. Other activities at the booth related to various City Works classes, including a rope-making activity and a demonstration of the BICAS-mobile to provoke conversations about alternative fuels and modes of transportation. On Monday morning a group of City High School students and teachers gathered at the U of A Mall in the early morning chill and marched together in the annual Martin Luther King March from the University of Arizona to Reid Park. Thanks to all of the students, parents, and staff who took part in these special weekend events!

In the Field

On Tuesday, January 17, Division I students will travel to Green Fields Country Day School to participate in the school’s annual event honoring and exploring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. In an effort to expand the event this year, Green Fields invited City High School students as guest participants. Joining the ninth graders on the trip will be Drama Teacher Charles Schnarr and a group of Division II drama students, who will help lead interactive activities with Schnarr’s Playback Theatre troupe.

Help Plan the “Alley Work Day”

City High Parents, the new PTO-type group started this fall, meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the school. The next meeting is January 17, and the agenda is to plan the Work Day scheduled for Saturday, February 18. This semester’s Work Day will focus on fixing up the alley area; activities to include gardening, painting, and basic carpentry. Volunteers and donations needed to make the Alley Work Day successful!

College Planning Events – Wednesday Morning

Visit from University of Arizona Rep

Dani Rollins from the University of Arizona Admissions Office will be at school on Wednesday, January 18 at 9:30 a.m. to meet with students interested in learning more about the college entrance process and the U of A educational program. Counselor David Spire coordinated the visit and will be available, along with Dani Rollins, to answer questions.

PSAT Results to be Returned

Students who took the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) in October should come to a meeting at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday (immediately following the U of A presentation) to receive their individual PSAT results. Counselor David Spire will distribute and explain the test results.

Week of Jan. 16, continued

Community Advisory Council

The governing board is seeking parents and students who would like to participate on the school’s Community Advisory Council. The Council is a group that provides board members and school administrators with input and feedback on the school’s progress and helps with big-picture planning. The Council will meet 3-4 times this semester. The first meeting is Tuesday, February 7 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. If you are interested, please contact Carrie Brennan, 623-7223, to learn more.
