  • What is a charter school?
Charter Schools are licensed by the state of Arizona and are held accountable for student progress regarding state standards. Charter schools are free to the public and open to all students throughout the community. City High School was granted its charter by the Arizona State Board for Charters in March, 2003. Charter schools provide autonomy for the school community to make decisions about its focus and direction. This independence allows City High School to pull together highly qualified teachers, committed parents, and engaged students to create a democratic learning community in which all voices are valued.
    Why downtown?
City High School is located in the economic and cultural hub of Tucson: historic downtown. There are many resources and partners all within walking distance or a short bus ride. Tucson-Pima Public Library, Arizona Historical Society, Tucson Museum of Art, the forthcoming University of Arizona Science Center, and a variety of art galleries are a few examples. Our downtown location ensures a diverse student body, facilitate transportation, and promote civic engagement.
Does City High School prepare kids for college?
Absolutely. All City High School students develop habits of critical thinking and independent learning that ensure their success in college. Students engage in rigorous learning experiences that require them to use their minds well. The academic program is aligned with state standards and entrance requirements for Arizona state universities.
How does City High School ensure a safe environment for its students?
According to recent research, there is a stronger sense of connection and, therefore, fewer incidents of behavior problems in small schools than in large schools. Part of the mission of City High School is "to be a community of learners in which all members...care about one another." City High School works to foster a tone of decency, trust, and respect among its school community, and maintains a zero tolerance policy for threatening behavior.
How are parents involved at City High School?
Parents are a critical component of the City High School community. Parents play a key role in school-wide governance through serving on the Community Advisory Council. Parents are invited regularly to join their son or daughter by participating in field trips, student conferences, and special events where students present their learning. City High School offers parents opportunities to volunteer in a range of capacities, such as guest speaking for a class, library assistance, fundraising, and office coverage. The City High Parents PTO group started in 2005 and meets monthly.

How will my child get to school each day?
The school is on public transportation routes, and many students use the Sun Tran services. To learn more about bus routes, monthly passes, and to find if your family qualifies for a reduced fare, visit the
SunTran website. Many students bike or walk to school, while others commute with family members. There are numerous bike racks on Pennington Street. There are 6 drop-off parking spots, 4 directly in front of the school and 2 across the street.

How are grades reported at City High School?
Students receive report cards at each quarter and semester that reflect their progress in all subject areas. Additionally, with the help of their advisor, each student maintains a portfolio that documents their learning in core classes, development of the Habits of Heart and Mind, and mastery of state standards.
What do students do for lunch?
City High School contracts with a local caterer to have lunches provided daily for students who pre-pay and for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch prices. To learn more about lunch options and/or to apply for free or reduced lunch, please contact
Business Manager Yash Shah. Students are also encouraged to bring their own lunches. Microwaves, refrigerators, and snack/drink machines are available.
Why would I choose City High School?
At City High School, students are pushed to their intellectual limit; are engaged with exciting curriculum; have teachers who know and truly care about them; and learn to become caring, decent, responsible members of the Tucson community. The real question is "Why wouldn't I choose City High School?"
