Parent & Family Involvement

Parent volunteer Anna G. helping out at the Pennington Street Block Party

Parents and guardians are important members of the City High School community. Parents are expected to join their son or daughter each semester for roundtables and division gateway exhibitions, and are invited to come to school for a variety of other academic presentations and performances throughout the year. There are many other ways that family  members can promote their child’s learning and support the school:

  • VOLUNTEER! The City High Families group, coordinates parent volunteer efforts to support the school community. The City High School Families activities include hosting quarterly staff appreciation lunches, organizing the annual Volunteer Work Day, providing breakfast snacks for weekly staff meetings, and helping with events such as the Pennington Street Block Party and graduation. The group also spearheads the Parent Fund for the School Tax Credit Drive each fall. Announcements and volunteer opportunities are posted in the Volunteer Opportunities section of our website and on the City High Families yahoo listserv, which all parents are invited to join. The City High Families group meets monthly on the third Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 p.m. To learn more about the group or to participate, contact Leslie Cho Newman.
  • GET INVOLVED! Parents can play a key role in school-wide governance by serving on the Community Advisory Council. The Community Advisory Council acts as our site council and includes student, parent, staff, board, and community representatives. The group reviews and advises school and board leadership on topics and issues pertaining to the school’s mission, goals, and progress; and also serves as the school’s NCLB Planning Committee by reviewing school-wide data and providing feedback on academic programs. Contact person: Carrie Brennan. The CAC meets the third Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
  • ATTEND WEEKLY FAMILY NIGHTS! Parents, guardians, grandparents, siblings, and City High School students are invited to join us for dinner, discussion and presentations by City High School faculty and guest community speakers on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Presentations cover a range of topics, such as helping students prepare for AIMS tests, homework tips, creating a family savings plan (financial literacy), and computer tutorials. Pizza from Brooklyn Pizza is served. Family Pizza Nights are part of our new Extended Day Learning program. Family members of students participating in these programs are especially encouraged to participate; however, ALL are welcome! For more information, contact Krista Niles.
  • STAY CONNECTED! Parents can access City High School’s student information system, PowerSchool, to track their son or daughter’s academic progress and attendance. PowerSchool is a web-based program that can be viewed from any computer connected to the internet. Bookmark this site and check it regularly for updates; or even better – use subscription features such as the on-line calendar and school news posts. Parents can also connect to City High School on Facebook and Twitter.
