City High Students Recognized as Finalists for National NPR and NYTimes Podcast Awards

This week, four City High School students were named as finalists in The New York Times Student Podcast Contest. The students, listed below, created their podcasts in Sarah Bromer’s Radio Production class, where students learn how to write, record, edit, and produce their own radio stories. The class publishes a monthly podcast called “City High Radio.” Stay posted—The New York Times will be announcing the winners soon!

Finalist Iman Flenory wrote a compelling story about school shootings, and the daily fear that grips many students and teachers. Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/user-564923358/school-shootings-how-worried-should-we-be-by-iman-flenory

Finalists Cougar Miller and Julia Ortiz investigated Gen Z attitudes toward climate change. Check out their story here: https://soundcloud.com/user-564923358/our-generation-our-climate-by-julia-ortiz-and-cougar-miller-1

Finalist Alex Soto’s piece, titled “What Is the Most Beautiful Sound?” is, well, simply beautiful. Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/user-564923358/what-is-the-most-beautiful-sound-by-alex-soto-1

Last month, a longer version of Alex’s piece was selected as a finalist in the NPR Student Podcast Challenge. Alex was one of 15 finalists chosen from a field of more than 2,000 entries nationwide. You can read about Alex and the other finalists here .

Our local NPR station, KUAZ, featured Alex’s story in a recent episode of The Buzzhttps://radio.azpm.org/p/radio-buzz/2020/5/29/173736-local-student-podcasters-garner-national-attention/. This piece profiles Alex and two other award-winning City High journalists, Samantha Zazueta and Paloma Martinez, as well as teacher Sarah Bromer.
